[What is the ATEX Directive?]
Since July 1, 2003, it has been mandatory within the EU to comply with the ATEX Directive for equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres.
■CE mark and ATEX
All equipment within the scope of the Directive must bear the CE marking and comply with the directive’s requirements. ATEX Directive incorporates conventional European standards for explosion-proof equipment.
■Purpose of ATEX Directive
The main purposes of ATEX are:
· Prevention of static charge
· Prevention of spark ignition caused by friction, impact, and abrasion
・ Ignition prevention due to temperature rise due to the same as above
・ The responsibility lies with the manufacturer
・ Certification by zone/category
■Zone / category division
The ATEX classifies the applicable equipment used in respective hazardous areas (zones) into the categories.
· Zone 0: Category 1
A place in which an explosive atmosphere may occur is (zone): present continually or for a long time, > 1,000 hours/year
· Zone 1: Category 2
A place in which an explosive atmosphere may occur is (zone): Present occasionally or 10 to 1,000 hours/year
· Zone 2: Category 3
A place in which an explosive atmosphere may occur is (zone): less likely present or for a short time < 10 hours/year
